VI. Application of Sanctification (12:1 - 15:4)

1. What is a christian’s reason for acting as they do?

1. (13:11) What is meant by “time”?
a. Not time in general but a critical period; perhaps the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem.
2. Do these people have salvation, are they saved? Why do you answer that way?
a. Thayer Definition:
(1) deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation
(a) deliverance from the molestation of enemies
(b) in an ethical sense, that which concludes to the souls safety or salvation
i) of Messianic salvation
(2) salvation as the present possession of all true Christian
(3) future salvation, the sum of benefits and blessings which the Christians, redeemed from all earthly ills, will enjoy after the visible return of Christ from heaven in the consummated and eternal kingdom of God.
b. They want to be saved (have salvation) but they do not have salvation for they have not obeyed the gospel. (1:7,13)
(1) They had faith (were religious) but did not they have salvation?
c. Per the subject under discussion, they are to do what is necessary to prevent molesting by the government, even death, which was about to take place.
3. What is near to them?
a. If not regular salvation then heaven, but Paul knew heaven was not near (Phi 1:23-24; 2Th 2:3) [62,52, Rom 58 A.D.] and he did not teach Jesus was going to return soon, perhaps their death at the hands of the gospel’s enemy.
4. What is meant by, “awaken from sleep”
a. They are to take action on the mater that is at hand, perhaps their death because they are christians.
5. (13:12) What is almost gone and what is near?
a. Night and day.
6. What is meant by day?
a. Their eternal salvation, i.e. their death.
7. What are they to lay aside?
a. Deeds of the world, i.e. things the worldly enjoys.
8. How are they to resist the night?
a. Put on the armor of light.
9. How does one put armor of light?
a. Study and practice the gospel [Col3:16]
10. (13:13) Paul uses 3 sets of things a person that is sanctified will not do. What are they and what do they mean?
a. Orgies of actives and drunkenness [lack of self control] ; sexual immorality and sensuality [dressing to cause another normal person to seek me]; quarreling and jealousy.
11. (13:14) What does “put on” mean?
a. More than putting on a coat or a pair of pants, means to sink into or become a part of.
12. Is a christian to have no lust?
a. Paul is saying a christian is not to fill their desires in a way that is a work of evil [worldly]. A follower is to lead a clean life he will not do verse 13.
